| Location | |
| Set in the tiny village of Wartling set just above the Pevensey Levels, in '1066 Sussex Country' lies between two famous Castles. The ancient town of Pevensey, and Pevensey Castle is steeped in history since being the Roman fort and port of Anderita built c.330 AD. and the landing place of the Duke William of Normandy, who defeated King Harold and his Saxon Army in the famous '1066' Battle of Hastings and was crowned King of England. Herstmonceux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens. Built originally in the 15th Century, Herstmonceux Castle embodies the history of Medieval England and the' romance' of Renaissance Europe. Wartling, or as the Doomsday Book lists Werlinges, derives its name from the old English for the 'settlement of the Wyrtels people'. Today from the end of the Churchyard it is possible to look out over the reclaimed Pevensey Levels to Eastbourne nestling at the foot of the majestic rolling South Downs, to pick out the Royal Sovereign Light Tower, some 6 miles offshore and imagine when this was the low sea-wall where at high tide the marshes were covered with water. This would have been the scene some 1000 years ago and when the lights of William the Conqueror's ships and invading army could be seen approaching the coast of England. | |

| Recommendations | |
| Just to let you know Mike and
I had a great time. Cannot fault it at all. Wonderful
house in peaceful surroundings and superb quality in decor and furnishings.
Spotlessly clean and everything provided that you could need. Breakfasts
excellent and enjoyed the opportunity to sit with other guests at a large
table, rather than all dotted around on your own at separate tables. Rowena
Gittoes was friendly and extremely helpful with information on good restaurants,
places to visit etc. Would recommend it to anyone and we will certainly
be returning there. Kathy Eldridge |

| It is with great enthusiasm that Mary Fairfield and I heartily thank you for the recommendation to stay at the Georgian Country House near Hearstmonceux. It was definitely the best B&B we have stayed at, and, mind you, all of them were quality locations. Not only were the bed and pillows made of down, a definite heaven after a ten hour flight from California, the rooms were large and wonderfully decorated, the towels soft and fluffy, and peace and quiet were the order of the day. The dining room, bright and sunny, was a wonderful place to start the day. Our hostess was very accommodating about making something specific for each guest. Each dish we were served was a tasty treat. In our post breakfast discussions, she always gave some extra suggestions on what to see and do in Sussex, and had some wonderful local knowledge background information to impart. We, for example would have only seen the cliffs at Dover, until she told us about Beachy Head and the wealth of local lore about it. There a some beautiful gardens on the grounds, and we were welcome to stretch our legs and breathe in mother nature at it's finest while there. This location is a definite revisit, and I hope you can send many more people there, as it is a wonderful place to stay. Sincerely, Doug Hart & Mary Fairfield |
