Greater London covers an area that is around 50 miles across (North to South and East to West) - even central London covers a vast area. To get from one side of London to the center by car or public transport can easily take an hour ! Even travel by tube train in the center can take 20 mins to get from one popular place to another.
The most convenient & cost effective means of travel, even in Greater London, is a One Day Travelcard ( 3 day cards are also available )
Can be used from 09:30 Monday to Friday or all day Saturday, Sunday and public holidays on the day of validity and for any journey that starts before 04:30 on the following day. The zones are numbered from Central London outwards so depending on where you are staying or wish to travel to, will affect which zone Travelcard you need. If you are not sure it may well be best to buy a Travelcard for zones 1-6 which will enable travel on all bus routes in London as well as all tube lines and most overground rail networks.
Exceptions are: all Sightseeing Busses - tickets for these are available in central London at most well know locations where these open top busses stop.
The Paddington to Heathrow and Gatwick Express trains also require a special ticket - available at Main Line train stations etc
