| THE NEW FOREST -
Over 900 years ago William the Conqueror claimed the magical heathland, glades, woods and shoreline of the New Forest as a royal playground. Its' subsequent history is steeped with smugglers, snake catchers and witchcraft.
Now the smallest of our National Parks, the peaceful atmosphere of this wonderful 220 square mile landscape has remained largely unchanged and also includes 26 miles of coastline. There are more than 7,300 ponies, cattle, donkeys and pigs and deer wandering through the villages and the Forest itself.
The Forest has 5 types of deer, 2,700 species of fungi, 700 types of wildflower and is also the largest remaining area of lowland heath in Europe, reputed to be rarer globally than rainforest.
VISITING THE NEW FOREST If you search hard enough you will be able to find 61 scheduled monuments, 630 listed buildings and 130 car parks. The tallest tree in the New Forest is over 178 feet high and the oldest an ancient oak is reputed to be over 500 years of age. Visitors can enjoy ambling along the 870 miles of road or exploring the 26 miles of coastline with its salt marshes, harbours, beaches, lagoons and mud flats. Visitors will also see ancient woodland, pine groves and open heath land. Forest based activities include cycling, horse-riding, sailing, kayaking and walking. Your are also within reach of the beaches at Bournemouth, the Jurassic coastline in Dorset, Portsmouth with its Spinnaker Tower, Salisbury Cathedral and the Isle of Wight. |
